This is a fun trail, but can be difficult in spots because of loose rock and over grown brush. There is large elevation change, so be aware that the climb will be steep on the way back. It took me 2 hours round-trip, but I was doing it for exercise and moving at a quick pace with just a 15 minute rest at the bottom.
Super ungroomed trail. Tall brush through most of it. No directionals except for a few #posts that are 1-8 which has NOTHING to do with measurements. Beautiful reward at the bottom. Uphill the whole way back and easy to miss trailhead leaving bottom.
Scenic hike, good portion of the hike is over old lava flow. Recommend closed toe, durable shoes. It was an hour down. Saw mongoose, several types of small birds. Snorkeling at the bottom is nice. Lot's of colorful juveniles.
Excellent exercise. 3.8 miles round trip moderate hike over steep terrain (1500 feet vertical drop) with very little shade. Bring plenty of water. Do not recommend climbing back at full sun, wait till afternoon. Main activity is snorkeling which is the best on the island. Bring some snacks and easily spend 4 hours just snorkeling. Dolphins frequent this area so "swimming with dolphins" is a possibility.
The trail starts out really nice, cool temperatures. However, as you get closer to the sea there are fewer trees no shade and lots of rocks to Boulder to get down to the monument. There are signposts as you go down indicating one, two, three, and so on. When you get to post number 10, you know that you have arrived near the monument. I was expecting a large statue and something grand and beautiful. However, it's just a small statue with a sign plate. Also, I went down to do some snorkeling. However, the monument is rounded by cliffs and you cannot go for a dip to cool off which made it very unpleasant for the return. To get down to the monument is approximately one hour 45 minutes, to get back is almost 3 hours, as you were going from C level up to almost 2500 feet.
