Very good food. Some of the best bbq I've had. The meat does not rely on the sauce to make it taste good but the actual meat is delicious.
Yo Jake - Who Ya Faddah! Da Big Mok!
Never had a bad experience with the food here - Some of the best BBQ on the island. Great pulled pork, great beef brisket, great Louisiana hot links, great BBQ rice bowls, great potato salad. Only reason not to give this a 5* review is due to the criminally relaxed hours of operation. Basically they're open for lunch - sometimes. Not sure if there are any official hours posted somewhere online or at the restaurant itself, but if so they can be wholeheartedly disregarded. If it's open, stop and get some. If you're driving from somewhere, call first.
Being from eastern NC, I've cooked and eaten more than my share of pork BBQ and am hard to please. With that said, I rate Jake's in the top 5 I've ever eaten. Jake uses old school grills that utilize indirect heat for cooking, which allow him to flavor his Q with hardwood heat and hardwoid smoke. No broiling or baking here - all of his meat is slow cooked the right way - low and slow. The pulled pork is sauced properly with just the right amount of Jake's sauce to compliment the meat without overpowering the flavor. The pork is truly pulled, not chopped and diced like so many tend to serve it. Served with white rice and Jake's own slaw, I found the pork moist and flavorable. The ribs are also slow cooked and basted with Jake's sauce. Be advised that a full rack is just that - a full rack containing 11 to 13 ribs not the normal 6 to 8 so many places call a "full" rack. The ribs were cooked just to my liking - moist and tender yet still on the bone. (Make sure you get extra napkins!) While I didn't have the tri-tip (they were out) I did see some on the grill being cooked and can confirm it is also slow cooked as well. Like most great BBQ spots, Jake's spot is small and cozy just off the side of the road. No digital signage or fancy seating, just great food and friendly folks. No trip to Kona should be considered complete without a trip up the hill to Jake's. I spent a week on the island and ate several 3 figure meals none of which held a candle to Jake's! The food was just phenomenal. Make the short trip and find out for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
I gotta say, this is some authentic down home BBQ. If you’re just visiting or need a regular BBQ fix, this place has got you covered. Not too Smokey, not too sweet. Just right. The spicy sausage is no joke. Overall, 5 stars. There was something for everyone in the family.
We stopped to have a quick meal. The food is great . Great place to have Hawaiian barbecue. Highway 11 going to the Puuhonua o Honaunau state park.
